As many as 29 bovines were seized from six mini trucks, which were intercepted by local Jaridih police in Bermo block of Bokaro district, early morning on Wednesday.
This is the first incident of seizure of a large number of cows being transported in vehicles from Bermo.
Talking to The Pioneer, officer-in-charge of Jaridih police station Rupesh Kumar Dubey said, “The six mini trucks were loaded with cows, buffalos and calves. These trucks were reportedly plying from Bihar towards West Bengal.”
He said that by the time the police reached the spot, the drivers and handymen of the vehicle were taken into custody.
"The cow-laden vehicles were seized on the suspicion of bovine theft," Dubey said and added, “The arrested persons have submitted some documents which we are investigating.”
There were seven cows, four calves, 13 buffalo and five buffalo calves loaded on the truck and there was also a noticeable violation of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, the OC informed.
"Prima facie, it has been found the cows were purchased from another place of Bihar border and shipped to West Bengal from where they were again to be sold to a third party," Dubey said.
