Solid waste management has made remarkable progress in the State’s urban local bodies (ULBs) during the current year, 2019-20.
This was revealed at review meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Asit Tripathy through a videoconferencing at the Lok Seva Bhawan here on Friday. Housing and Urban Development Secretary G Mathivathanan outlined the issues for discussion.
Tripathy directed the district Collectors and ULB administrations to focus on 'waste segregation at the source' and substantial changes in attitude and behavior of the urban dwellers with regard to disposal of solid wastes.
It was revealed that 100 per cent ‘door to door collection of household waste' has been achieved in 24 ULBs out of total 30 major ULBs taken up under SWM monitoring. In other six towns namely Gajapati, Puri, Nayagarh, Baleswar, Khordha and Balangir, the average achievement is around 83 per cent. Tripathy directed these ULBs to be 100 per cent compliant within two weeks.
The State has achieved 77 per cent success in 'segregation of waste at the source'. Only six districts, Kalahandi, Kendrapada, Nuapada, Dhenkanal, Angul and Koraput achieved 100 per cent segregation.
It was also revealed that land identification, plan and estimate have been completed for construction of 308 micro processing centers ( MCCs) in 30 ULBs out of which construction work has already advanced in 96 MCCs.
Tripathy directed Collectors to carry forward the campaign of pursuing behavioral changes in the communities by appointing more 345 Swachh Sathis and 79 supervisors.
