Police on Friday arrested two persons for their bid to extort money from Lanjigarh-based Vedanta Alumina Ltd Process Head Sanjib Kumar.

Kalahandi SP Battula Gangadhar said the arrested persons, Gagan Patra (28) and Prabha Dora (24), posing themselves as Maoists, had been threatening the officer over phone to kill him for the last three days.

“They were asking for a ransom of Rs 15 lakh from the officer whose phone calls were intercepted by the police,” the SP said.

While Gagan is engaged as Gram Rojgar Sevak (GRS) of Champadeipur village, Prabha, a native of Bengaon village, is working as a quack. Both villages are in Lanjigarh block.

The bail petitions of the accused were rejected by a court here and they were remanded to custody.
