On the last day of filing of nomination papers, Punjab on Monday witnessed total 188 candidates staking their claims for a berth in the Lok Sabha. With this, the total number of nominations received by the poll panel has gone up to 385.
The Election Commission will now scrutinise the nominations it has received on April 30, and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is May 2, after which the final number of candidates in fray would be known.
Prominent among those who filed their nomination papers on Monday include SAD-BJP combine candidate Ajay Singh Deol (popularly known as Sunny Deol) from Gurdaspur, SAD-BJP candidate from Sangrur Parminder Singh Dhindsa, Congress’ Manish Tewari from Sri Anandpur Sahib, Congress candidate from Ferozepur Sher Singh Ghubaya, among others.
Former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had also filed his papers as covering candidate of his daughter-in-law Harsimrat Kaur Badal from Bathinda.
Punjab Chief Electoral Officer Dr S Karuna Raju said on last day of nomination, 15 candidates has filed their nomination for the Parliamentary Constituency (PC)-01 Gurdaspur, 21 for Amritsar, 11 for Khadoor Sahib, and seven candidates filed their nominations for Jalandhar (SC).
