‘State to auction 31 mines in phased manner’

While the mineral industry is worried about the March 31, 2020 deadline, Mines Minister Prafulla Mallick on Wednesday allayed their fears, informing that the State Government is fully committed to a timely auction of mineral blocks.

Addressing the Odisha Mining Conclave organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) here, he said, “We have already started the auction process of mineral blocks. Three iron ores mines, a manganese mine and two chromite and one graphite to limestone block have been auctioned. Another 31 mineral blocks is in the pipeline for which notification has already been issued. Auction process will be completed in a phased manner. The 31 blocks include 27 are iron ore mines, two graphite and as many manganese mines.”

He also urged the mineral industry to use latest technology in exploration process.  “You people should try to use latest technology in exploration process. Please make ensure least damage to environment and ecosystem of the mining area,” said Mallick.

He asked industries to take help of a forest cell for exploration. Chief Secretary Asit Tripathy said mining activities will work seamlessly and there would be no disruption in production.

ICC Odisha Council convenor Manish Kharbanda said commencement of production after two years of allotment will not help the industry and urged the both the Centre and State Government to make necessary arrangement in this regard.

Steel Additional Secretary RK Sharma said, “Mines sector contributes 10 per cent to the GSDP. It will contribute significantly to the State economy in future.”
