A demonstration was organised at Mastercanteen Square in Bhubaneswar on Friday in solidarity with global climate strike, being called by the Fridays for Future led by teenaged Swedish climate crusader Gretha Thurnberg.
This is for the fourth time such an international awakening of citizens held worldwide and second such event in Odisha after September 27 this year.
The Bhubaneswar event was organised jointly by People's Action for Climate Justice (PACJ) a consortium of civil society organisations, Prerena International Green Army and Extinction Rebellion, Odisha.
Hundreds of climate and social activists held a meeting there highlighting the climate concerns, holding placards, donning caps, showing posters and banners etc.
Time is ripe Odisha Government should set up a task force to identify climate hotspots in Odisha and bring a legislation to protect the victims and their livelihoods, said convenor of Coast Council and PACJ Sudarshan Chhotoray
The organisers of the event also urged the Government to declare climate emergency in Odisha keeping in view the frequent natural disasters that the State is witnessing in almost every alternative year.
Chairman of Prerana Dr Dilip Srichandan, social activists Subas Panda, Sachikanta Pradhan, Rosalin Pattnaik, Jayanti Sahu, former member, State Women Commission Snigdha Panigrahi, civil society members Malaya Mahapatra, Prakash Srichandan and Aruna Prasad Dihudi were present.
