Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Main Bhi Chowkidar’ programme, in which he will address citizens of the country through videoconferencing in over 500 locations across India, will be webcast on giant screens in 15 locations across Jharkhand on Sunday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said on Saturday.
Party workers and commoners in Jharkhand will be able to attend the videoconferencing in all the 14 Lok Sabha constituencies here. The Jamshedpur constituency, due to its higher population and area, will have two venues for the event, the BJP told the media.
Addressing the media at the party’s state headquarters in Ranchi, Urban Development Minister CP Singh said that every citizen of the country is a Chowkidar and is performing his or her duty by protecting and safeguarding the country in some way or the other.
“The Prime Minister has already addressed over 25 lakh Chowkidars by now. Over 30 lakh people in the country have added prefix Chowkidar to their names in social media and #MainBhiChowkidar is one of the most trending hash tags on Twitter lately,” said Singh.
He added that Modi’s address to the people of the country through the Main Bhi Chowkidar event will further increase the sense of pride many Indians take in being security guards of the country at different levels.
Taking a jibe at Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Singh said that Gandhi’s Chowkidar Hi Chor Hai remark demeans the integrity of all security guards in the country.
“Though some people look down upon Chowkidars, our PM believes that Chowkidars are the safety providers and protectors of our country,” he said.
The Main Bhi Chowkidar events in Jharkhand will be attended by all the BJP bigwigs here. Right from Union Minister Jayant Sinha to State BJP President Laxman Gilua and local MLAs to State ministers, every venue in Jharkhand will have at least one senior BJP leader during the PM’s address.
The Main Bhi Chowkidar war cry of the BJP started trending on social media after Modi added prefix Chowkidar to his Twitter handle. The developments happened in reaction to Rahul Gandhi’s repeated jibes at Modi, in which he referred to Modi as Chowkidar and popularized the slogan, ‘Chowkidar Hi Chor Hai’ (security guard is a thief) among the Congress cadre.
Soon after Modi made the change on his Twitter handle, BJP President Amit Shah and other party stalwarts followed the pattern. Social media played a pivotal role in BJP’s 2014 landslide victory, and with the 2019 General Elections around the corner, the Main Bhi Chowkidar trend on social media may give the party a fillip in the polls.
