Prithvi Shaw's brilliant 99 of 55 balls laid the foundation of a memorable run chase but Delhi's tail fail to capitalise on it as even after needing 6 runs of 6 balls with 6 wickets remaining hosts Delhi Capitals couldn't cross the finishing rope but still managed to win by 3 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders in the first super over of this year's edition at Feroz Shah Kotla on Saturday.
Delhi was on course of win at the end of 17 overs, needing 18 runs of 18 balls with 8 wickets on hand but failed to chase it down forcing the match into super over.
However in the Super over Kagiso Rabada's brilliant spell pulled out one of the most memorable win for Delhi. The South African defended 11 runs in the super over to win the tie for Delhi by 3 runs.
Earlier, chasing 186 runs to win, Delhi suffered a early setback as inform Shikhar Dhawan (16 of 8 balls, 2 fours and 1 six) failed to convert the good start into big total and was caught out by Andre Russell after hitting a four and a six to Piyush Chawla in the third over of Delhi's runchase.
But after that early jolt, the two young treasures of Mumbai's domestic cricket - Prithvi Shaw and Shreyas Iyer dominated the proceedings in Kotla. The duo started slow and initially focused on spending time on crease rather than going for a big shot early on. And the strategy worked for them, they duo added first 50 runs in 40 balls. And after that they started attacking KKR's bowlers especially prime spinner Kuldeep Yadav.
Kuldeep was welcomed with a 13 run over and then in the next one, he was hit for 2 sixes and a four conceding 20 runs. In that same over (12th of the innings), Shaw completed his first fifty of this year's edition in just 30 balls, hitting 4 fours and 3 sixes.
And when it was looking like the Shaw-Shreyas duo is going to win it for Delhi, Shreyas Iyer (43 of 32 balls, 4 fours and 2 sixes) was sent back to the dugout by Andre Russell after he got caught near boundary by Shubman Gill. It was a sigh of relief for Shubman as just two balls before he dropped Iyer at the same position.
At the time of Delhi's skipper dismissal, Capitals were 116-2, needing 70 runs in the remaining 8 overs.
And after that, local hero Rishabh Pant enters the field to finish the game. But it was Prithvi's night and the littler Shaw made it memorable by turing the gear and exploting loopholes in Kolkata's attack.
He continues to fetch boundaries and didn't let the Knight Riders to put any sort of runchase pressure on Delhi side.
At the time of second strategic time out he was batting at 81 of 46 balls.
And in the 17th over, Shaw smashed Prasidh Krishna for 3 fours fetching 15 runs. In process the duo also completed 50 runs stand in just 28 balls. But the highlight of the stand was Shaw's contribution.
Even in presence of hard hitting Pant at the other end, it was Shaw who scored majority (40runs) in the stand, in comparison to Pant's (9 in 10 balls).
With 18 needed in last three overs, Delhi lost Rishabh Pant (11) after the left hander tried to hit Kuldeep for maximum. But the big setback came in the third ball of 19th over, Prithivi in attempt to go big was caught by Dinesh Karthik on 99.
He just missed the century by a solo run.
Earlier batting first, Andre Russell's third consecutive quick and impactful innings under pressure helps Kolkata Knight Riders overcome poor start and post 185 runs against Delhi Capitals.
Batting first after losing toss, Delhi lost half his side for just 61 runs in 9.1 overs but then 95 runs partnership between Andre Russell (62 of 28 balls, 4 fours and 6 sixes) and skipper Dinesh Karthik (50 of 36 balls, 5 fours and 2 sixes) completely changed the complexion of the game and help Knight Riders ride on Delhi bowlers to take KKR to a match winning total at slow track of Kotla.
Especially Russell was once again the star for Kolkata for the third consecutive time and the West Indian all rounder single handedly fought against Delhi to give KKR an upper hand.
He was ably supported by Karthik, who played a role of the anchor while Russell took the opposition bowlers into cleaners hitting huge sixes and entertaining thousands of fans gathered at Kotla.
