Fresh restrictions imposed in Kashmir

Saturday, 31 August 2019 | Mohit Kandhari | Jammu

Fresh restrictions were imposed in the city and other parts of the Kashmir Valley as a preventive measure in view of Friday congregational prayers which passed off peacefully, officials said.

Restrictions under Section 144 of the CrPc were announced on public address system. People have been asked not to venture outside and barricades have been placed.

Public transport remained off the road and motorists faced hardships as several roads , leading to religious places, and other vulnerable areas remained out of bounds.  Heavy deployment of security personnel were made across sensitive places to prevent assembly of people after the Friday prayers. Concertina wires were rolled out to block entry and exit routes of downtown areas of Srinagar.

Normal life remained disrupted across the Kashmir Valley for the 26th consecutive day, with markets closed and public transport off the roads.

While landline telephone services have resumed in many parts of the valley, mobile telephone services and all Internet services continue to remain suspended since 5 August after the Centre's move to abrogate Article 370, that provided special status to Jammu & Kashmir, and bifurcate the State into two union territories.

Meanwhile, Governor, Satya Pal Malik, visited Kargil on Friday to meet and interact with the representatives of the people of Kargil to understand their concerns following the formation of the Union Territory of Ladakh.
