Senior IPS officer and Bengal Additional Director General of Police(ADG), (CID), Rajeev Kumar, being probed for his role in the investigation of the Sharada and other chit fund cases as the head of the SIT formed by Mamata Banerjee in 2013, on Thursday got yet another breather from the Calcutta High Court which extended the shield against his arrest by the CBI for little more than a month but clipped his wings substantially.
Kumar, who is under the CBI scanner for his alleged dubious role in the multi crore chit fund probe that has found a number of crucial evidences like laptops, pen drives, and dairies missing from police custody had been at large after the Supreme Court vacated its order preventing CBI from arresting the top cop. The Apex Court had asked him to take anticipatory bail from lower courts or Calcutta High Court.
The Bench of Justice Pratik Prakash Banerjee on Thursday granted Kumar bail till July 10 but said he would be required to appear before the CBI and reply to its questions on daily basis. The Court also directed him to deposit his passport and stopped him from moving out of Kolkata even for any official work. The Court directed the central agency to go to Rajeev Kumar's residence every day at 4 PM to register his attendance.
The Court also debarred Kumar from taking a lawyer with him during the interrogation but said no coercive action including arrest could be taken against him till July 10.
Meanwhile, the CBI on Thursday grilled another IPS officer Arnab Ghosh for several hours for the second consecutive day.
