DGP RP Sharma on Thursday ordered a Crime Branch (CB) probe into the suicide of a theft accused in Mahakalpada of Kendrapada district on August 26, which had triggered protests from the locals.
A DSP-rank officer of the Crime Branch has been entrusted with the task to investigate into the incident and its connected cases.
“Considering gravity of the case, and for a fair and impartial investigation, the DGP has ordered Crime Branch investigation into the incident,” said a police release.
It may be mentioned that the accused, identified as Abinash Paital (25) of Balanala village under the Marshaghai police station in the district, had escaped from the Mahakalpada police station and allegedly committed suicide on August 26.
Apart from locals staging protests demanding action against the guilty cops, the family of Abinash had alleged that police personnel had demanded money for the release of the youth. They had brutally tortured him which led to his death. But the cops cooked up a story that he had fled from police custody and hanged himself.
later, DGP Sharma had suspended Mahakalpada PS IIC Shyamaghana Behera for dereliction of duty.
