Tuesday, 31 July 2018 | PNS | BHUBANESWAR

Tension prevailed at Mahatma Gandhi Marg here on Monday when members of the Students Congress clashed with police  after the latter tried to prevent the activists from going in a rally to gherao the State Assembly protesting against the growing unemployment in the State.

Police detained over 50 protestors, including Student Congress president Itish Pradhan.

The Student Congress members took out the rally from the Congress Bhawan protesting against the apathy of the Odisha Government and the Central Government towards the rising unemployment in the State. Holding party flags and shouting slogans against the State Government and the Centre, the protestors also burnt an effigy of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

The situation turned violent when police personnel deployed on the spot tried to disperse the agitators while the latter broke the barricades  and tried to march towards the Assembly. Earlier in the day, Pradesh Congress Committee president (PCC) president Niranjan Patnaik had also attended the protest rally.
