Former sarpanch of Kacharu panchayat of Sundargarh district was crushed to death by an elephant in the wee hours of Tuesday. locals staged protest for hours keeping the body on road and demanding compensation of Rs30 lakh.
According to sources, Ranko Oram (50), former sarpanch of Kacharu panchayat, is a member of elephant drive away operation squad in the area. On Tuesday wee hours, while Ranko and other locals were trying to disperse a seven- member elephant herd, an elephant herd strayed into Harpali village and suddenly, an elephant from the herd attacked Ranko and trampled him to death on the spot. After getting information, forest officials rushed there and seized the body for post mortem.
Forest officials discussed with the protesters and assured them of all assistance and job to his daughter in elephant drive away squad. Rs 20,000 as advance was given to his family members for his final rites.
“After completion of necessary formalities by his family members, we will give them rest Rs3.80 lakh as compensation for his death in elephant attack,” ASF Dillip Sahoo said.
