Punjab State Election Commission on Sunday termed the elections to over 13,000 gram panchayats of the State as “by and large peaceful”, with “a few” incidents of violence reported from some places.
Describing as “unfortunate” the incident at Ferozepur’s Lakhmir Ke polling booth, where one death was reported and attempt of booth capturing was also made, the Commission’s secretary Dr Kamal Kumar said that action would be taken against those guilty.
Regarding repolling, Dr Kumar said that the reports from various districts are pouring in, and the exact figure would be known after compiling all reports.
Thanking the people for their enthusiasm to cast their votes in large numbers, Dr Kumar said that the poll percentage is expected to be more than 80 percent, as of now.
“We are receiving the figures from all districts, and as per trends, the percentage is more than 80 percent,” he said, adding that polling percentage crossed 80 percent in Fazilka (86), Bathinda (84.75), Pathankot (82) and Sangrur (81). Polling percentage in Sri Muktsar Sahib was recorded at 77.92, and in Fatehgarh Sahib at 77.20.
