Battling for life for eight days, six-year-old rape victim of Salepur died at the SCB Medical College Hospital here on Sunday evening.
The girl had been rescued in a very critical condition with deep injuries in her head, face neck and groin areas from a school campus at Jagannathpur village under the Salepur police station, 30 km from here, on April 21.
“Since it is a medico-legal case, the body will be handed over to the girl’s family in the presence of police after postmortem later today,” Hospital Superintendent Prof Shyama Kanungo said. Put on ventilator, the girl’s condition never improved even as the possible treatment was provided to her, Kanungo said.
One Md Mustaq (25) of the same village was arrested in connection with this crime of rape and attempt to murder. “Since the victim has died now, the attempt to murder charge will be converted to murder charge,” said Salepur PS IIC DK Mallick.
The girl had gone to a kiosk in her village to purchase biscuits on that fateful evening. When she did not return after a while, family members went out in search of her. She was finally traced lying unconscious without cloths on her body in the school campus with blood oozing out from her head and mouth.
