Postal services in Brahmapur have come to a standstill in as many as 304 branch post offices following an indefinite strike by Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDSs), the extra-departmental employees of the India Posts, which reached eighth day on Wednesday.
The employees who staged dharna in front of the Brahmapur Head Post Office raised slogans and threatened to continue the agitation until the demands are made.
Due to the strike, delivery of mails, pensions and Employment Guarantee Scheme wages and other postal services is hit badly and people face great inconveniences.
With various competitive and universities examinations round the corner, students experience various problems like making drafts and withdrawing and transferring money due to the demonstrations and locking of the post offices by the GDSs.
Brahmapur Head Post Office Senior Postmaster Ambikeswar Behera said more than Rs 1 crore of transaction was being held in the PO, but since one week it has been hampered due to the strike.
As per sources, in the first seven days of the strike transaction of around Rs 100 crore has been hampered in the head post offices in Ganjam, Gajapati and Kalahandi, Kandhamal districts under the Post Master General Office in Brahmapur.
