Paralysed Hazaribagh man walks after stem cell therapy

Friday, 31 August 2018 | PNS | RANCHI

There appeared no light at the end of the tunnel for Md Abid Ansari (27), a resident of Chalkusa Block in Hazaribagh, till the early 2018. Ansari was critically injured and was paralysed on the lower part of his body in early 2015 while returning from work when his car met an accident in UAE. He was completely bed ridden for about four years.

The man who was lone bread earner for his family residing in Hazaribagh was in complete despair when he lost his job and was dependent on his wife and parents for every little thing, helplessly looking at his four-year-old son. All his efforts to get treatment across the country went futile.

However, destiny had other plans for him. He had lost all hopes to ever stand on his own, when he came across a video on stem cell therapy by NeuroGen Brain & Spine Institute in Mumbai. He kept on researching on his mobile phone. In February 2018 he went to the Hospital for treatment and on Thursday, August 30, 2018 he was walking with the help of calipers in Ranchi talking to media persons about the miracle.

He shared how he was bedridden for four years and now after the first phase of therapy he has become functionally independent, now able to walk and play with his little son. He remembered how he returned to India in 2016 and visited various hospitals in Ranchi, Banaras, Delhi and other places but all his efforts went futile.

Dr Richa Bansod, Head Surgical Services, NeuroGen Brain and Spine Institute, who was accompanying Ansari, gave a detailed account of stem cell therapy that is made available to patients coming to the hospital across the world. She also gave examples of how Autism and Neuro Developmental disorders like cerebral palsy, mental retardation, brain stroke, muscular dystrophy, spinal cord injury, head injury, cerebellar ataxia, dementia, motor neuron disease, multiple sclerosis and neuropsychiatric disorders are treated there. She said that till date, the organization has already successfully treated 6000 patients from over 60 countries.

“At NeuroGen, the patients are not only given stem cell therapy but also put on an extensive rehabilitation program following stem cell therapy and are taught bed mobility techniques like rolling, getting up from lying down position as well as transfer techniques like transfer from bed to wheel chair and vice versa, wheelchair to car and so on,” she said.
