The education secretary Bhupinder Kaur ‘Aulakh’ has asked the students to shun crackers and observe a ‘Green Diwali’ this time.
In a letter to all the students of the State, she said that it is commonly observed that the crackers burst on Diwali pollute the environment. The pollution affects the new born babies, the old and the sick, she said and added that the incidences of burn injury to children also spiral during the Diwali festival. The secretary appealed to the students to celebrate Diwali by lighting lamps, cleaning and decorating homes, sans fire crackers.
Following the letter of the secretary, the education director, R K Kunwar has asked all the chief education officers to ensure that the children are enlightened on the concept of Green Diwali.
He said that the inspiring message of the secretary should be circulated in all the schools so that the students are encouraged to celebrate a Green Diwali this year.
