NURSl becomes first law varsity to run on solar power

Curtailing the dependency on electricity to a great extent, the National University of Study and Research in law (NUSRl), Jharkhand has become the first law varsity in the country to utilize solar energy extensively to illuminate the campus, spread over 63.76 acres of area.

Seeking several benefits like eco-friendly approach, cost-effectiveness, diverse application use and constant technological advancements have encouraged the university personnel to adopt solar panel concept model. Interestingly, NUSRl is among the largest national law universities in India.

Tapping one of the renewable sources of energy to fullest, the efforts of administrative officials of this National University rewarded a fruitful result as from August 1, 2018, two main buildings – Girls’ and Boys’ hostel, where the consumption of electrical energy is quite high will be fully made operative through solar light panels. During the orientation ceremony, CM Raghubar Das will inaugurate this much needed facility on the university campus.

Assistant Registrar(In-charge), NUSRl, Dr. MRS Murthy while sharing the details on switching over from electricity to solar system with the Pioneer on Monday said that the attempt of installing solar panels within the university campus has been underway since December 2017. “After rounds of discussions with Jharkhand Renewal Energy Development Agency (JREDA) personnel, the installation task of solar plates was completed at the rooftop of girls’ hostel within a month (June 25 to July 28), and now the connectivity has been extended till Boys’ hostel.”

According to Murthy, several law schools of India after conducting a meeting with the senior officials of Ministry of Renewable Energy, GoI in December 2017 had written to the Ministry for providing the assistance for installing solar panels on their respective premises whereas by far, none of the law universities have yet completed the installation work of the solar panels. Also, as per the Registrar, two to three extra solar units are required to further expand the reach of solar lights inside the campus.

“100 Kilo Watt that is equivalent to one unit was granted to us that covered up both the hostels. lights, fans and other electronic appliances at the hostels now completely work with the support of the solar panels. If two more units are given, then the remaining areas like cafeteria and the administrative building will be easily get covered up, making NUSRl campus, an energy efficient campus completely in a few months,” added Murthy.

A rough estimate suggests that after the successful execution of solar panels at the hostels, around 300 rooms are now working with the support of this vital renewable source of energy. If university officials are to be believed, then soon the solar panel systems will be linked to the centralized electrical substation situated inside the campus. “All the units will be connected to the substation for collective solar coverage. As soon as the monetary crunch gets resolved, the university will start taking the step towards this direction for which talks are on with the officials of Jharkhand Government,” Murthy stated.
