Following the recent violence in the Utkal University recently, the university authorities on Saturday decided not to hold students’ union elections this year.
“Students’ union elections would not be held this year as the situation on campus is not conducive. The decision was taken at the PG council meeting today,” said Students’ Union Advisor Basant Kumar Mallick.
Sources said the university authorities apprehend that pre-poll and post- poll violence will lead to disturbance of the academic atmosphere in the institution if elections are held.
The authorities the university campus is still not completely free from anti-social elements. The campus is not free from violent incidents occurring regularly and therefore is not a peaceful campus.
The university administration had also cancelled the students’ elections last year following incidents of violence on the campus.
Similarly, in the Raveshaw University the authorities are not ready to hold direct elections despite opposition from students. On Saturday, members of Ravenshaw Bikash Abhijan led by president Chittaranjan Mohanty gheraoed the university Vice-Chancellor demanding to hold direct elections.
The protestors said the move to hold direct election is violation of the Supreme Court directive to hold direct polls.
