The Odisha Police have claimed that the overall Left Wing Extremism (LWE) scenario remained under control in the State during 2018 except for some parts of the State.

The districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Kandhamal and Nuapada are now affected by the Red rebels.

Considering the improvement in overall situations in the State the Union Government has brought down the number of LWE Districts from 19 to 15, DGP Dr RP Sharma said in a Press meet here on Saturday.

The DGP said improving the police Infrastructure and capability have become top most priority of Government and accordingly, a sum of Rs 68.91 crore has been provided in the Budget under the scheme of Modernisation of Police Force during the current financial year 2018-19 towards achieving the goals.

“It has done away with manual registration of FIRs; all FIRS are now entered into the IT system. Station Diaries in all police stations have also been digitised,” he said adding, these have ensured that there can be no manipulation in FIR or station diary at any level as they are up-loaded to the State Data Centre.

These changes are bringing in a silent revolution in police functioning and enhancing transparency and credibility of police papers, the DGP claimed.

He said for the major sporting events, including Hockey World Cup involving 16 international teams and Indian Super League for soccer, non-obtrusive arrangements were done by the force.

“More emphasis was laid on technical surveillance by deployment of CCTVs than physical deployment of police personnel,” Sharma said.

On the crime control front, 2018 has been a successful year for Odisha Police, the DGP said.

“The Crime Branch successfully detected the sensational Patnagarh parcel bomb case, the STF arrested many dreaded criminals including gangster Tito alias Syed Usman Ali and his 17 associates. EOW registered 28 cases in the year 2018 and arrested 103 accused persons,” he added.

Besides, Cyber Crime unit of Crime Branch took up 22 cases in the year with arrest of 17 criminals including some foreigners, he said and added, three new Cyber police stations were started in Brahmapur, Rourkela and Sambalpur in 2018.
