The two holy rivers Kanh and Saraswati flowing through the Indore city, once considered the symbol of holiness and culture of Indore district, has now turned into a dirty drain which carries the sewerage and also the solid waste dumped into these rivers.
Both the rivers originate from the mountain of the Umaria village and in the end join river Kshipra. The length of the river Kanh is 21 km and the river Saraswati is 12 km.
Both the rivers after their origin flow at two different paths and after 12 km, River Saraswati merges into the river Kanh in Juni Indore area of Indore city.
After several efforts in the past, now Indore collector Nishant Warwade has come up with the time bound plan of 60 days to clean these two rivers and ADM Indore Nidhi Nivedita has been appointed as the project officer for this river cleaning drive.
ADM Nidhi Nivedita while talking to The Pioneer told that the river cleaning will be done in parts.
In the first part the flow of city drains and sewage will be blocked in the river and construct the distilling chamber oxide filter unit.
In the second step, she said, “We will remove the mud and debris from the river bed, do measurement of river and removal of encroachments from the river sides and plantation. And in the third step we will do repair of check dams, renovations of river banks and beautification of river sides.”
In this river cleaning project drive different departments of government will jointly work as a team.
The national green tribunal has many times warned the Indore administration on the poor condition of the Kanh and Saraswati rivers.
ADM Nidhi Nivedita added that the participations and labour of the local people of Indore, school and college students and NCC cadets will also be made compulsory so that they also be the part of this social responsibility.The 60 days project of river cleaning will start from May 1, the labour Day.
