Hearing on a public interest litigation regarding the strike by private bus operators underway in the State, the high court has asked the State Government to explain what it has done in the matter considering the strike which has been going on for 10 days. The high court division bench of justices Rajiv Sharma and Alok Singh has directed the State Government to reply by Tuesday.
According to the case details, private bus operators have been on strike for the past 10 days now. Since buses of the Garhwal Motor Owners Union (GMOU) limited, Kumaon Motor Owners Union (KMOU) limited and Kumaon Adarsh Motor Samiti operate in most of the mountainous and remote areas, the bulk of people in the mountainous regions use these buses. Since such buses are the major means of transport in the mountainous regions, the people including school children have been facing severe inconvenience due to the strike of the private bus operators. Considering this, Gabua resident Neeraj Tiwari had filed a public interest litigation in the high court. The petitioner informed the court that about 2000 buses of the private bus operators have been off the roads for the past 10 days. The transportation system in the mountainous regions has been crippled by the strike but the state government is not taking any concrete measures to effectively address this situation, the petitioner stated.
