Five Illegal arms seized, 4 held in city

The Commissionerate police, which are in line of fire for being unable to curb illegal arms trade, on Tuesday, in a special drive against possession of illegal arms, seized five weapons and arrested four persons in the city.

The arrestees were identified as Ramachandra Barik (30) of Anlajodi, Sanjay Kumar Jena (25) of Kuapada in Puri, Gyana Ranjan Singh (35) of Palaspur in Tangi of Khordha district and Gouranga Charana Sitha (35) of Tareni Nagar in Salia Sahi here.

Police said accused Ramachandra and Sanjay were arrested in connection with a case in the Khandagiri PS under Section 25 (I) (B) of Arms Act. A 9mm and a 765mm pistol were seized from the duo, respectively, along with five live ammunitions and an Alto car.

Gyan Ranjan was arrested in connection with the Capital PS case no 454/29.10.18 under Sections 25/27 of Arms Act and a 765mm pistol with a live bullet were seized from him.

The fourth accused Gouranga was arrested in connection with Nayapalli PS case no 493/30.10.18 under Section 25/27 of Arms Act, and two revolvers with five rounds of live bullets and an auto rickshaw were seized from him.

The sources of procurement of these seized illegal fire arms were being verified and follow-up action was under progress, police said. Other cases registered against the arrested persons were under verification; and all the accused would be forwarded to court, police added.
