Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University (DSPMU), which is gearing up to conduct the student union poll for the first time, may go for direct elections, following the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee. With this, DSPMU will become the first university of the State to conduct the student union poll through direct method.
As per the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations, if the university is functioning in the same campus, the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the concerned university will organise direct students union poll where the councilors will be elected department-wise, similar to the lines of smaller universities like the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi or the University of Hyderabad.
According to the sources, the university had recently constituted a core committee for the upcoming election under the guidance of the senior faculty members. However, due to the delay in admit cards publication and distribution, the university has pushed the date of releasing the election notification. Earlier, the university had announced to release the notification in the last week of the September.
“We too want that the students’ union poll is organised soon. Besides, the formulation of the election core committee team, the university is working on the preparation of the electoral roll as more than 3,500 digitalized IDs are yet to be prepared. As soon as the final drafting will get over, the university will release the election notification,” said VC, DSPMU, Dr Satya Narayan Munda.
Notably, in all other State-varsities of the State, the student union poll is conducted through indirect method considering the committee recommendations which read that the larger universities with widespread campuses could allow individual colleges to constitute their own representative bodies, which would further elect representatives to the apex university body and the committee had suggested three modes for such indirect elections.
