Drains are cleaned to stop water logging, says MCD

Saturday, 30 June 2018 | PNS | Dehradun

With monsoon settling in the State, Municipal Corporation Dehradun (MCD) has tasked around 120 sanitation workers to clean the drains in the city. The civic body officers said that the drains are being cleaned daily so as to spare the residents the water logging problem which recur every monsoon. They ascribe the problem of clogged drains to the people throwing plastic and garbage there. This is why the drains get clogged and they overflow during the monsoon season, they argue.

Earlier, MCD had launched a flood control cell and 24x7 Helpline number for solving the water logging complaints in the city. Besides, the civic body had conducted a drive from  June 1 to 30 for cleaning the drains. As per the information received from the sources, the flood control cell has registered 41 complaints so far. It is claimed that almost all the complaints have been resolved by the team assigned for the work. The cell is working in three shifts which has around five to 10 people working to resolve the complaints received by the people.

Speaking on the matter,  the municipal commissioner Vijay Kumar Jogdande said, “Keeping  up with the earlier measures initiated by MCD, we have firmed up new programmes this year. Tenders for cleaning three to four big drains were floated earlier this month. A special programme was hosted too that continued from July 1 to July 30. Big drains that open in Rispana and Bindal have  already been cleaned by the team members. Around 70 per cent of the cleaning work has been done by the team assigned with the task.”

Providing more information, he said, “We have assigned the duties to 120 sanitation workers for cleaning the drains in the city.

The team will regularly clean the drains which will hold the water from getting collected in one place. The team is being directed by the officials, including  additional municipal commissioner Neeraj Joshi, health officer RK Singh and an assistant engineer Rachna Payal. These officers are regularly monitoring the working of the cell as well the cleaning process”.
