Continuing their crackdown on notorious criminals in Ganjam district, police nabbed a hardcore criminal, Jitu Swain alias Badal, after an encounter at Dengapadar Chhak on the Hinjilicut-Seragada road late on Monday night.

Acting on a tipoff on the movement of Jitu, police set up a roadblock at Dengapadar Chhak and intensified frisking of vehicles.

Subsequently, after finding police on the spot, Jitu, who was passing through the area by a motorbike along with his associate, opened fire and tried to flee the spot.

In retaliation, police fired back at Jitu injuring him on his right leg. However, his associate managed to escape the police dragnet. Police seized a mouser, a mobile phone and a motorbike from Jitu’s possession and got him admitted to the MKCG Medical College Hospital here for treatment.

The criminal was wanted in as many as 15 cases in Khordha, Bhubaneswar and Ganjam.

Earlier on October 26, two dreaded criminals, Manoj Sahu and Biswajit Barik, had been arrested following a police encounter in Chamakhandi of the district.
