On a day the ruling BJP was engaged in celebrating the second anniversary of the Surgical Strike, the activists of the opposition Congress torched the effigy of the Union government at Balliwala Chowk here on Saturday in protest against the surging prices of essential commodities.
Leading the Congress workers, the state Congress vice- president, Surya Kant Dhasmana said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is only doing the politics of verbosity while the prices are skyrocketing, making things difficult for the common man. He added that the wrong polices of Modi government are responsible for the price rise.
Dhasmana said that over the past four years, the price of LPG cylinder has jumped from Rs 400 to Rs 900. He said that the UPA government had provided petrol and diesel at Rs 76 and Rs 58 per litre respectively while the international price of crude oil was at its peak. “But now, the petrol is being sold for Rs 90 and more while the price of diesel is Rs 80 per litre,” he added.
The Congress workers later consigned to flame an effigy of the Centre while venting anger over the issue.
