Even if the memories of infamous Burari suicide case in Delhi are yet to fade out of people’s minds, the Capital City woke up to a tragic incident on Monday with seven members of a family found dead in mysterious circumstances. Resident of Rice Mill colony at Arsandey in Kanke locality of the city found Deepak Jha, his father, mother, wife, two kids and brother dead on Monday morning.
According to preliminary investigation, police suspect murder and suicide in the case. Senior police officials said that it appears that the two brothers first killed five of their family members and later committed suicide by hanging themselves from the roof of their house. The incident came to light early on Monday morning when a school kid peeped into the house and saw Deepak hanging from the roof. The news spread like wild fire in the city and police reached the spot within minutes. They found the bodies of two brothers hanging from the roof in two different rooms, while other bodies were lying there. DIG, Ranchi Zone, AV Homkar said that total seven bodies were found, where two persons seem to have died due to hanging, while others have died due to smothering.
“Prima facie it appears that the two brothers killed others by smothering and then they hanged themselves. Suicide notes have been found where a host of issues have been written, including the fact that the family was facing acute financial crisis,” Homkar said.
“It has been written in the suicide note how the family was unable to pay for milk, the school fees of the children. It has also been written that they did not have money for medical treatment.
This suggests that they were facing financial pressure. However, this could be one of the reasons. Police are investigating all possible angles and will be able to say something only when something concrete comes up,” he added.
Sources said that two suicide notes were found from the site. A 15-page letter was written by Deepak Jha and a two-page note was written by his younger brother Rupesh Jha. Police also said to have found injuries inflicted by sharp weapon on the bodies of Deepak’s father Sachchidanand Jha, his mother and the kids.
“It’s difficult to say whether the incident was planned in peaceful mind by the two brothers or was done instantaneously. We are talking to close relatives of the family, neighbours and people at the work place of Deepak to ascertain if there was any behavioural change in them,” said Homkar.
A high-level team led by SP (Rural) Ajeet Peter Dundung has been formed in the case, where DSP Silli and DSP Headquarters alongwith four inspectors are members. SSP Ranchi Anish Gupta will monitor the case. Special teams of CID, SFSl, finger print bureau and State police were holding investigation at the site.
The family originally hailed from Bhagalpur. Deepak Jha used to work as a sales manager of popular furniture company in the city.
