Even as the UP Police was struggling to defuse the communal strife at Kasganj, a daylight gangwar involving two communities led to the death of a youth and subsequent communal tension in Amethi on Tuesday afternoon. The excahnge of fire also left over half a dozen others with critical injuries.
As per reports, As per reports, Ashfaq of Baragaon hamlet was accused of making an attempt on the life of local Block pramukh Rajesh Vikram Singh two years back. On Tuesday, Ashfaq came to Vijaya Bank branch at Jagdeeshpur on Tuesday when he was attacked.
His aides and the assailants exchanged indiscriminate fire sending panicky locals and commuters to scamper to safe shelter. The firing left Ashfaq dead while several others were left with serious injuries. The injured were rushed to a Community Health Centre and then to Amethi district hospital.
In protest, the market was shut down and local villagers blocked the national highway and even indulged in brick batting.
District Magistrate of Amethi, Shakuntala Gautam and SP, KK Gahlaut rushed to the spot to control the situation. After defusing the situation, the SP removed Station Officer (SO) of Jagdishpur, JB Pandey and attached him with Reserve Police lines. Meanwhile in Hapur, a notorious criminal carrying a reward of Rs 50,000 on his head was gunned down in an encounter with police in City Kotwali area.
Acting on a tip-off, a police team tried to intercept two bike-borne criminals in Kotwali Hapur area late on Monday night but the criminals opened fire and tried to flee. In retaliatory firing, one of them was injured while the other fled. The injured later identified as Shamshuddin of Mohan Pasi of Jahanaganj, was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed.
A reward of Rs 50,000 was announced on Shamshuddin and many criminal cases were registered against him in several police stations. A manhunt has been launched to nab the escaped criminal.
