Accused attempts suicide in custody

A murder accused allegedly attempted suicide by slitting his throat in the lockup of the Tangi police station in Cuttack district on Thursday morning.

The man, identified as Balram Nayak, attempted to end his life by slitting his throat with a sharp object, police said.

Balram was earlier arrested for allegedly killing his wife and was in police custody for interrogation. He was supposed to be taken for a court hearing on the day.

But before that, the cops found him lying in a pool of blood inside the lockup. Balram was initially rushed to Tangi hospital in a critical condition and later, he was shifted to the SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack and his condition was stated to be critical.

The reason behind the suicide attempt of the murder accused was yet to be ascertained, police said.
