More than 50 thousand farmers from different parts of country thronged the national Capital on Thursday, demanding a 21-day special session of Parliament to discuss the continuing agrarian distress and to seek the passage of two private member bills — on loan waivers and on assured procurement alongside MSP for farm produce.
The march was organised by All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC). After marching at several places in Delhi, the farmers on Thursday evening gathered at Ramlila ground. The farmers on Friday will march from Ramlila Ground to Parliament Street to put forward their demands before the central Government.
The two day protest march began at 11 am on Thursday. The march started from Brijwasan passed through Majnu Ka Tila, Nizamuddin and Anand Vihar. .
Meanwhile, Delhi Police said they have made elaborate arrangements for the farmers’ march that will start from Ramlila Ground on Friday and move towards Parliament Street. There will be a rope on both the sides of the marching farmers with the police walking on the other side of the rope to ensure traffic is not affected, police said, adding that they will ensure minimum inconvenience is caused to commuters.
Meanwhile, police has warned of traffic congestion on Thursday evening as the farmers are marching towards Ramlila Ground. Police said commuters might face jams as the farmers are marching towards the venue.
Many of the farmers under the banner of AIKSCC reached the capital in trains and other packed into buses and other modes of transport to Delhi and later converged at Ramlila Ground to press for their demands.
Among other demands, the farmers want debt relief and remunerative prices for their produce.
Speaking with The Pioneer, Yogendra Yadav, political activist said that the Government has not done anything for the farmers and they want the Government to immediately waive-off their loans.
While marching towards Ramlila ground a group of farmers from Tamil Nadu was carrying skulls of two fellow farmers who had allegedly committed suicide. The group also threatened to march naked if they were barred to go to Parliament on Friday.
