Telangana has added a feather to its cap by becoming the first State in India to surpass 3 GW of cumulative solar power installation while along with Karnataka it accounted for about 50% of all solar installations in the country during 2017. 1 GW of solar power is equal to one thousand MW of power.
According to the annual India solar power quarterly market update as a whole 9.6 GW was installed throughout the country during the year. Thus 2017 was the best year for solar installations in the country, the report said. The installations in 2017 were more than double the 4313 MW installation during 2016. While 90% of the new installations were in the large scale sector, 10% were the rooftop installations.
Telangana and Karnataka installed over 2WG each and accounted for approximately 50% of all installations across the country.
Reacting to the report Minister for municipal administration and urban development K Taraka Rama Rao said, "Proud moment as Telangana becomes the first State in India to cross 3GW in solar energy production. Compliments to the Energy Minister and his team".
