In a significant step, Telanganan Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has announced an accident insurance cover of Rs 5,00,000 for each of the 7 million farmers in the State. The Chief Minister who is on a visit to north Telangana districts of Karimnagar and Adilabad told a meeting of the farmers that the premium under the scheme will be paid by the Government and it will cover the deaths due to accidents as well as ill health.
He also announced the implementation of farmer’s investment incentive scheme for all the horticulture crops, under this scheme the Government will pay incentive of Rs 4000 per acre per crop. In case any farmer foregoes the incentive, the Government will transfer the amount to the respect farmer’s coordination committee.
The Chief Minister said that the purpose of the regional farmer’s coordination committee meetings was to understand the problems of farmers and resolving them.
In a first direct attack on the Prime Minister Narendra Modi KCR expressed disappointed over his failure to act on the farmers’ problems. He told the meeting that he had met the Prime Minister and other Ministers in NDA Government 20 times to requesting them to link the national rural employment guarantee scheme with agriculture. “They will only listen but do nothing”.
He blamed the present BJP and the previous Congress Governments at the center for the plight of the farmers in the country. To the loud cheers from the audience he said that he may have to lead a national movement on the issue of farmers.
"Since independence only Congress and BJP have ruled the country and neglected the agriculture sector", he said.
"When the Union Government in increasing the salaries and DA with pay revision every year (for the employees) why it is not increasing the minimum support price of farm produce every year", he asked.
