The Supreme Court on Monday declined the Centre’s offer to place on record the report of Justice BN Srikrishna committee on “Data Protection” before a five-judge Bench that has reserved its verdict on the validity of the Aadhaar Act.
Days after the report was submitted to the Centre, Attorney General KK Venugopal on Monday appeared before a three-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra carrying a copy of the same. He informed the Bench that though the report is in the public domain yet the Centre wished to supply hard copies of the report to the five-judge Bench also headed by CJI Dipak Misra.
CJI said, “I do not think that is required,” following which the report was not tabled. The Justice Srikrishna panel has suggested measures to be taken to protect personal information of citizens, the role and duties of data processors and the rights of individuals.
