Gujarat Congress has opposed unprecedented hike in fees for undergraduate medical, dental and physiotherapy courses in the State. According to Congress spokesman Manish Doshi, fees for these courses have been increased nearly five times in the current academic session in all six Government medical colleges.
Though the hike in the fees came after almost one and a half decades, but Doshi said that the State Government shouldn’t increase fees by 400 to 500 per cent as it would affect those students who were coming from lower middle class and poor families. According to him, nearly 1300 students studying in six Government medical colleges in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar and Rajkot would be impacted due to increase in fees. Another 500 students studying in two dental and six physiotherapy Government colleges across the State would also be impacted due to fee hike.
In the case of medical colleges, fees have been increased from Rs 6000 to Rs 25000 annually. Students of dental and physiotherapy colleges will have to pay Rs 20,000 and Rs 15000 annually instead of Rs 4000 and Rs 3000 respectively.
