Water crisis looms again

Friday, 30 March 2018 | Staff Reporter | New Delhi

Delhiites may face water shortage as the water level in Wazirabad pond has depleted to 669.90 feet against the normal level of 674.5 feet. The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) in a official release issued on Thursday mentioned serious depletion of water and reduction in release of raw water by Haryana in river Yamuna. The production of water treatment plants of Delhi has been adversely affected.

“Delhi people have to face the situation of water scarcity, although the agency is claiming that the DJB is endeavouring to rationalise the water supply. The water will be available at low pressure for few more days in the following areas: West, North, Central Delhi, Part of South Delhi, including Delhi Cantonment and New Delhi Municipal Council  (NDMC ) area”, DJB mentioned in its official release.

DJB advised to make judicious use of water and also contact at telephone nos. 1916, 23527679, 23634469 for water related problems.

Meanwhile, this is not the first time in this season when Delhi is facing acute shortage of water supply. Earlier too, water was not being supplied by the (DJB) in some pockets of the national Capital. Moreover, people in Central Delhi also complained about the polluted water in supply.

From Moti Bagh of Central Delhi to South Delhi areas, for instance — lajpat Nagar, Defence Colony, Saket and Karol Bagh area — Delhi people have made several complaints pertaining to the shortage in water supply.

The DJB is claiming the high-level ammonia in Yamuna water being supplied by Haryana through Munak Canal. DJB officials said that they are trying to fulfil the requirement of Delhi people with 70 per cent of water. “We are working under constraints as we are getting inadequate supply of water, we are trying to provide water irrespective of the zones,” said a DJB official.

It may be noted that the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has also sought a report on water pollution from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) as the DJB complained about increased level of ammonia in water being supplied by Haryana.

Meanwhile, Delhi BJP unit chief Manoj Tiwari said that no summer action plan is ready with the DJB. Reacting to the recent incident in which a 60-year-old man was murdered at Wazirpur Industrial Area over water-related dispute, Delhi Congress president Ajay Maken had demanded compensation for the victim’s family.
