Among the traditional science courses offered at Undergraduate (UG) level at Delhi University (DU), the highest number of registrations for admission to academic session 2018-19 are for the BSc(Hons) Mathematics.
The UG registrations of DU, which starts on May 15, will open till June 7. About 2,69,386 registrations for undergraduate courses have been received till date.
As per the data, provided by DU official past week, more than 31,700 students have registered for the mathematics course followed by 29,399 for B.Sc (Hons) Chemistry and 28,497 for BSc (Hons) Physics.
A DU official told that among chemistry, Physics and Mathematics courses, Mathematics remains at the top in terms of number of registrations as more students apply for BSc (Hons) Mathematics as compared to BSc (Hons) Physics and BSc (Hons) Chemistry.
BSc (Hons) Mathematics is offered by 42 colleges of DU out of which 16 are women colleges.
"Papers of BSc (Hons) Mathematics are taught by using software's like Mathematica, Matlab, R-software, Maxima which gives advantage to the students of BSc (Hons) Mathematics at the time of on-campus placements as many companies prefer hiring experts in these software," said Dr Pankaj Garg, Associate Professor, Mathematics, Rajdhani College, DU.
Further, experts opined that the course is helpful to those who want to their career in actuarial science. Actuarial science is the discipline that applies mathematical and statistical methods to assess risk in insurance, finance and other industries and professions. Actuaries are professionals who are qualified in this field through intense education and experience.
"B.Sc (Hons) Mathematics helps students to clear many papers of actuarial science course conducted by the Actuarial Science Society of India. Further it also help students to get jobs in research organisations like DRDO, CSIR etc. and other government jobs where quantitative aptitude is required," said Garg.
