In a case that baffled the police, four extortionists — Sonu (22) Sehdev (23) Mukesh (27) Sachin (19) residents of lalKuan, Pul Prahladpur, Delhi — were apprehended in Faridabad on Thursday. According to the DCP South district, this case is intriguing because the accused individuals used a novel modus operandi to keep the victim in perpetual threat with actually kidnapping the minor boy.
The South district police arrested these individuals after a complaint was filed in Safdarjung police station, by an Assistant Engineer working in MCD. According to police, the complainant stated that he was receiving extortion calls from several United States and Canada mobile numbers, demanding Rs 1.8 crore payoff.
On June 13, an attempt to abduct the complainant’s son while he was on his way home from a cricket practice was made in order to induce fear, said DCP South District Romil Baaniya. Following the complaint, a case was registered in Surajkund police station. A trap was set up after which the individuals were arrested in Badkhal lake, Faridabad, he said.
Police said during interrogation, it was revealed that Sachin was the mastermind behind the scheme. They communicated with the complainant using Voice over Internet Protocol and advanced mobile apps — TextNow and 2ndline, which made the calls untraceable. The accused individuals revealed that they were from poor families and were looking to earn quick money.
