Democracy under threat in Modi Govt: Ex-PM

Monday, 30 April 2018 | Staff Reporter | New Delhi

launching an all-out attack on the Central Government, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that it has failed to fulfillall its promises made before assuming power and it's the time it should provide an account of its works to the people of the country.

Singh sought support for the party and its president Rahul Gandhi to save the democracy of the country as the Modi Government consistently undermining its Constitutional institutions.

He was addressing the 'Jan Aakrosh' rally organised by the party in the national capital. The rally, which was also addressed by Sonia Gandhi and Congress president Rahul Gandhi, saw the Congress outlined the failures of the BJP-led Government at Centre.

The former Prime Minister also highlighted that less unemployment opportunities has left the youth worried. The anger among all sections of the society has risen up in the last four years due to the increasing threat to the safety and security of the people, he said.

Pointing out the increasing fuel prices, Singh said that the people are facing immense problems due to the skyrocketing fuel prices despite the falling prices of crude oil in international market.

The former Prime Minister also said the price of crude oil across the world was falling while in India the prices of petrol and diesel were constantly rising.

Talking about unemployment, he said it was on the rise as the Modi Government has not created the much-promised two crore job opportunities, leaving youths and students, who had taken study loans, a worried lot in absence of jobs, he said.

Thousands of party workers attended the rally. Also, party's bigwigs such as Ajay Maken, Sheela Dixit, and Randeep Singh Surjewala also attended it.

United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Chairperson and former Congress president Sonia Gandhi also launched a tirade against the Central Government, alleging that the roots of corruption have become stronger in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) regime.

In her address she alleged that the Government has left no stone unturned in undermining institutions and targeting political rivals by misusing central agencies. She also accused the Government of dividing communities for electoral benefit.

What happened to Modi ji's slogan 'Na khaunga, na khane dunga', even the roots of corruption have become deeper under his watch," she said.

Urging people to unite under Rahul Gandhi's leadership, the Congress leader said "Our country is going through a difficult time. We must all unite and stay alert to fight against this regime. She also said that it is saddening to see that our society is suffering from unprecedented violence and hatred and people are suffering.
