Aiming better sports infrastructure in national Capital, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) on Wednesday approved seven sites in Dwarka, Rohini and Narela for developing sports complexes. The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal at Raj Niwas.

The sites where sports complexes will be developed are - Dwarka Sector-8 (9.78 ha), Dwarka Sector-17 (8.00 ha), Dwarka Sector-19, Phase-I (8.00 ha), Dwarka Sector-23, Phase II (8.00 ha), Rohini Sector-34 (22.25 ha), Rohini Sector-33 (8.90 ha) and Narela Sector A-7 (7.27 ha)

The sports complex will also host football and hockey players besides cricket. The infrastructure will be have athletics/jogging track, tennis, volleyball and basketball courts, skating rink, multigym, and facilities for other sports activities.

The DDA is also giving pitch to the rural youth with development of wrestling, boxing, weight lifting, kabaddi, shooting, athletics, archery sports complexes.

"lands, which cannot be developed for their intended purpose due to site constraints, could be identified for development of sports/recreation facilities like jogging tracks, yoga sheds, which would allow their public utilisation as well as upgrade these areas and prevent encroachment," a DDA official said.

For budding sportspersons from EWS category, DDA is providing 10 per cent in coaching contracts. "The policy was amended for coaches to train more trainees in this category and DDA would pay the coaches share of fees for additional trainees. DDA would provide kit for the EWS trainees," said the official.

Elaborating more on updated sports policy for the Delhi youth, the official said facilities at all DDA sports complexes during non-peak hours would be utilised for conducting school-level competitions/tournaments in various sports activities throughout the year. 

"The DDA would also approach Sports Authority of India (SAI) for utilisation of DDA's sports infrastructure for organising regional, national and international level tournaments/championships. Facility for a particular sports discipline would be identified at each major DDA sports complex to make these complexes centres for excellence in these sports. SAI would be consulted for providing coaches to undertake coaching at these sports complexes," the DDA said in a statement.
