Wednesday, 28 February 2018 | Staff Reporter | New Delhi

A 31-year-old IAS aspirant committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling fan at his rented accommodation in Southwest Delhi’s Neb Sarai area on Monday night. Police said the deceased, Samrat Chauhan, a resident of Pataudi tehsil in Gurugram left behind a suicide note which mentions that he is not happy with his life as he has not achieved anything. He mentioned that no one is to be blamed for his death.

Monika Bhardwaj, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police 1 (Southwest), “We received a PCR call on February 26 regarding suicide of a boy at Room no 5, house no 62 in Ber Sarai. The boy Samrat Chauhan was found hanging from ceiling fan after the door of the room was forcibly opened. Crime team inspected the spot. A suicide note has been found. He has mentioned that no one is to be blamed for his step. Since he could not achieve anything in life, he is taking this step.”

A senior police officer said that they suspect that Samrat had failed the qualifying exam due to which he took such an extreme step. Waiting at the Safdarjung hospital mortuary, a relative of Samrat said, “Samrat was a very hard working child. He used to regularly speak to his parents. Right now, they are inconsolable.  It was on Monday night that the parents did not receive a call from Samrat than they rang up one of his friends to go and check on him.”

His friend informed that Samrat has locked himself in the room. It was only Hari Om, Samrat’s father said, “When I reached his room, I saw him hanging from the ceiling fan. My heart just stopped. His depression was a reason for this.”

Soon after news of the suicide reached the police, an ambulance and doctors rushed to the spot, where Samrat was pronounced dead. A forensic team also arrived at the spot to collect evidence and photographs. The body of the victim has been sent to Safdarjung Hospital here for postmortem, and the police are conducting further investigation.
