25 malaria, 17 dengue cases reported last week

With intermittent rain and subsequent waterlogging in the national Capital, the cases of vector borne diseases are on the rise, taking cases of malaria to staggering total 173 in which 42 fresh cases were reported in till July 28.

Two cases of malaria were reported in February, one each in April and March, 17 in May, 25 in June and 42 till July 28, according to the report released by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), which tabulates data on vector-borne diseases for the city. According to the report 25 new malaria cases reported last week.

Also, 107 dengue cases have been reported this season so far with 17 cases reported last week. Out of total dengue cases, 19 were reported in July, six in January, three in February, one in March, two in April, 10 in May and eight in June. 62 cases of chikungunya have also been reported in the city, according to the report.

The report further stated that domestic breeding checkers (DBC) have found mosquito-breeding in 80,411 households in the city till July 28. It said 76,293 legal notices have been served for various violations and "8,878 prosecutions have been initiated".

The North Corporation has also started dropping an environment-friendly mosquito larvae-eating fish Gambusia in water-bodies and fountains in its areas. "A young fish is capable of consuming 100 to 300 larvae in a day and even survives on weeds," a senior official of north corporation said.

On June 28, Delhi lt Governor Anil Baijal had directed local bodies and other agencies to intensify vector-control measures. He had also asked for regular meetings at the level of district magistrates with all stakeholders to review the situation in their respective districts.

Overall, the vector-borne disease had affected 9,271 people in the city last year.

A senior corporation official said the civic body has taken a number of measures to prevent mosquito breeding, including creating awareness by using various media, deploying more dengue breeding checkers to check breeding and desilting of drains to avoid waterlogging.

The total number of the people affected by dengue was 9,271in 2017 and the numbers of malaria and chikungunya cases recorded in 2017 stood at 1,142 and 940 respectively. Of the 9,271 dengue cases, 4,726 patients were from Delhi, while 4,545 had come to the city from other States for treatment.
