Art of a yogi

Bharat Thakur, the founder of artistic yoga and an acclaimed artist, is showcasing his paintings and sculptures

Talking about the interesting choice of title, Thakur says, “It’s a circle of light, that I am seeking which lies not above my head but above other’s heads. So, the light does not have a colour. But, when it is refracted and reflected, you get as many colours as you can see in the VIBGYOR.”

There are four different techniques that he has used in the paintings – impasto acrylic technique, soft pastels, pen and ink on paper and terracotta sculptures. It is technique or rather the absence of any set principles which makes his style distinct from other artists. “My use of rollers and bare hands in abstracts sets me apart basically I am person who doesn’t follow the principles of techniques.” His art is driven more by intuitions and less by techniques.

He  points out, “The process of my abstracts is spontaneous. Though black and white monochromatic colours are my favourite, I love the use of turquoise green and gold which I think are different colours.”

Moreover, he has chosen an unusal subject for his paintings, Aghori Babas. He explains, “I have lived most of my life in the mountains in Himalayas with them under their tutelage. So as an artist I paint what I am.”

Of the paintings that are displayed, Thakur says, the garden of Eden is his favourite. He says, “It is very dreamy and it was an experiment which gained fructiciton and I adore that work of mine.”

The time devoted to each of his works is subjective. “My big abstracts take about 15-20 mins to complete while the figurative works go through a process of sketching and then on paper or canvas depending on the medium,” says Thakur who considers William deekooning and Michelangelo – the God of figuritive as his inspiration.

For Thakur, art holds an important place in his life. “Art is more than just painting for me. Art is my way of life. Art for me is food, breath and sleep.”

There are some people who can’t be put into a box, Thakur is the same as he feels that he can’t describe himself. “People need a definition for any subject and  I don’t want to define or describe myself. I find experience within an experiment and I am a thought that defines definition. For me the journey is more important than the end because I firmly believe there is a method in my madness – I am a Yogi. And a Yogi doesn’t give air to these areas of life.”
