After the humiliation over its handling of the Goa affairs and ahead of the Karnataka Assembly elections, the Congress on Saturday removed senior party leader Digvijay Singh from managing the party’s affairs in both the States. Singh, a close confidant of party vice-president Rahul Gandhi, was removed as AICC incharge of Goa as well as Karnataka by party chief Sonia Gandhi.
While senior party leader KC Venugopal was appointed as General Secretary Incharge of Karnataka, A Chella Kumar was assigned to look into the affairs of Goa as AICC Incharge. Former Union Minister late Vilas Rao Deshmukh’s son Amit will be Chella’s colleague as AICC Secretary in Goa.
Venugopal’s new team will comprise of Mainckam Tagore, PC Vishnunadh, Madhu Yashki Goud and Sake Sailjanath as AICC Secretaries.
Digvijay Singh’s removal came as a surprise since he was one of the core members of the party’s high command and had been advocating Rahul’s elevation. Singh was charged by party for messing up with the Goa affairs where he failed to form the Government even after the Congress being the single largest party in the recently concluded Assembly polls in the coastal State. BJP on the other hand managed regional and independent MlAs to pave way for the formation of the Manohar Parrikar Government.
