The police have claimed that the youth found shot in the head near the New Empire cinema on Monday prima facie appears to have committed suicide. The police also caught a hotel employee and his friend who have confessed to having dumped the body on the road. The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Nivedita Kukreti said this while addressing the media here on Wednesday.
The police team formed to investigate the death of a youth from Bageswar identified as Yatin Verma whose body with a gunshot wound to the head was found near the New Empire theatre in the vicinity of Clock Tower in Dehradun on Monday - had checked CCTV footage to ascertain that he was lodged at the Doon View hotel. They interrogated the staffers of the hotel. The assistant manager Rajkumar and his friend Shatrughna reportedly told the police that Verma had arrived at the hotel at around 10-30 pm on Saturday. Wanting to make some extra money, they did not enter his name in the hotel register. On the next day, when they went to his room at around to get the rent they got no response from inside despite repeated raps on the door. Curious to know what happened, they peered into the room and saw him lying splattered in blood. They got scared as per their testimony to the police, and along with a third friend, dumped the body on the road at 3 AM. They cleaned the room and hid the bloody bedding, a gun they found with Verma and his luggage in an empty water tank on the roof. Subsequently, police searched for these items and also found a suicide note in his clothes.
The police also found two guns and a knife. Notably, his parents had told police that they had no knowledge of their son staying in Dehradun as he was working for a private company in Noida.
