A team of Jharkhand State Commission for Women on Wednesday inspected MGM Medical College and Hospital following deaths of infants at the hospital from past two months. led by chairperson, Kalyani Sharan, the team inspected women’s ward and said that lack of doctors at the hospital is a matter of great concern and steps need to be taken to provide better services at the hospital. She also convened meeting with the superintendent of MGM Bhartendu Bhushan. Sharan said that the superintendent has failed to give any satisfactory answer to the queries.
The superintendent said that in July, 141 babies were admitted to MGM hospital. Among them, 60 including 52 newborns (less than 28 days old) died. But, they saved the remaining 81. Similarly, in August so far, 33 newborns out of 106 have died, but 73 have also been saved. Yesterday, five more premature and underweight newborns have been admitted.
The Jharkhand Human Rights Conference, the nonprofit organization had first raised up the infant deaths. Congress supporters, on the other hand, took out a rally and staged a dharna at Sakchi roundabout for the second consecutive day. The protest was led by the party's national spokesperson Ajoy Kumar and former minister Subodhkant Sahay. The activists’ strength is increasing day by day.
Addressing the gathering SRA Rizwi Chabban said that the Chief Minister has not spoken a word about this tragedy or visited the hospital, despite it being in his home district.
“The situation is becoming grave. Immediate action must be taken to control the situation. The BJP government is claiming that these deaths are due to malnutrition. It is important to note that out of the six incubators in Jamshedpur, two incubators are not functional. Also, one incubator is supposed to take care one infant, while the government and the hospital authorities were keeping 3-4 infants in a single incubator,” noted Chabban.
