The much awaited free Wi-Fi service for the students of Ranchi University (RU) that has been lingering since long may get completed within two months. According to the Secretary, Department of Higher and Technical Education, Ajoy Kumar Singh, the testing process will get completed in August while by the end of September 2017, students of RU and Vinobha bhave University (VBU) can avail the facility of high speed free Wi-Fi service at their colleges.

Notably, in an attempt to take up the ambitious ‘Digital India’ mission ahead, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) members’ recommended to equip the college campuses with hi-speed Internet service at the earliest, however, several technical glitch has delayed the attempts in taking up the project. Notably, the university has paid Rs. 4.25 crore to National Informatics Centre (NIC) for carrying out the tasks. 

“Considering the time constrain, we have speeded up the work of installing all mandatory equipments on university campuses. By August 2017, testing work will get complete while by September 2017, the department will formally inaugurate the free Wi-Fi service facility. Only, due to the change in procurement system, NIC tender has been cancelled for the other three varsities, hence, the technical work at these universities may take another few months,” said, Secretary, Higher and Technical Education, Ajoy Kumar Singh. 

Notably, RU few months back has transferred the funds to NIC for taking up the task on priority basis and to cover up few colleges affiliated to RU in the first phase. However, the deadline for completion of the project is yet to be declared by the company as no officials from the varsity is clear about it.
