More than 2,200 bank branches of the nationalised banks in the state would remain closed on Tuesday as part of a nation-wide strike of the bank unions.
More than 10 lakh bank employees and officers are expected to take part in the nation wide strike.
The general secretary of the united forum of bank unions of Uttarakhand, Jagmohan Mehdirata said that seven out of total nine bank unions are participating in the strike and the strike would be historic. He said that more than 12000 bank employees would participate in the strike in the state. The bank unions are agitated on proposal of merger of banks, decreasing their rights of unions, increasing tendency of banks to outsource works and increasing Non Performing Assets (NPAs) of the banks. The unions are demanding adequate compensation for the employees for extra work in the aftermath of demonetisation decision of the union government. The bank workers are of the view that the government should increase their salary, provide tax relief to the retried employees and bring all workers under the ambit of old pension scheme.
The employees belonging to different bank unions staged a protest march at Astley Hall on Monday. The speakers on the occasion charged the government for pursuing the policies which are detrimental for the interests of the workers. They appealed the employees to ensure that the strike is successful.
