Police on Wednesday recorded statements of some girl students and hostel superintendent, warden and security guard of the DAV School of Business Management (DSBM) here in connection with the suicide of student Tanya Banerjee on Tuesday, which triggered shockwaves in the city.
A five-member team of the Capital police station that has been formed to probe into the incident recorded the statements. Notably, the team was formed after Tanya’s parents alleged that she was harassed by some hostel inmates regarding theft of cosmetics, following which out of despair she had called her mother and said she would end her life.
later in the night, she committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in her hostel room.
DSBM Principal DN Mishra said the institute’s authorities are fully cooperating with the police as they also want the truth to be unearthed as they wish that such an unfortunate incident should not happen anywhere. But at least the parents of the girl could have immediately informed the authorities, teachers or the hostel superintendent or even police if she had complained that she was being harassed by other students, Mishra said.
Regarding Tanya’s roommate’s absence in her room on the fateful night, Mishra said the roommate is senior to her and is used to leaving the room to study with other students.
